First time camper. Why schedule a camp appointment?

First time camper. Why schedule a camp appointment?

So, you or your child has decided this is the summer to try sleepaway camp.  Who is freaking out more, you or your kid? You recall those sweet days of camp years ago, where you met your best friend, and you never wanted the summer to end. You lived, no existed, through the dull and dreary 10 months of the year, waiting for the freedom and glorious 2 months of camp. It will be great for your child, they will grow, try new things make new friends.” Rationally, you know this to be true, however you also know they are a very picky eater, a bit shy, and let’s not even discuss showering - which unlike the Olympics, is not a bi-yearly event, OMG! Maybe this is a mistake, they’re not ready. I’M not ready!   BREATHE.....The Canteen has some helpful hints to help you prepare and relieve some of that stress and anxiety.

But it’s only January, why are we talking about camp now? Around this time of year, many camps send out their packing lists, or what your child will need for camp. Much of what is on this list is simple, and then there are some others you can’t imagine why they would need that. The sleepaway camp experience has not changed very much over the years, but what you bring has. Hard trunks (ahh that scent of cedar or moth balls) are a thing of the past and did anyone ever really use wool blankets? That’s where The Canteen comes in, we are experts in all things camp.

Scheduling a one on one camp appointment, is recommended by many sleepaway camps. It helps both you and your camper to begin thinking about camp and begin feeling excited about going. When your child chooses their comforter and coordinating cot-size sheets, their clipcase and stationery, each choice gives them a sense of control and eases the tension and creates excitement about going to camp. We will walk you both through your camp packing list, providing expert advice along the way. For example, for all those pairs of underpants and socks, cheaper is better, since many do not return home and if they do, you may want to toss them anyway. Everything your child brings to camp needs to be labeled with their name. Recently, camps have found that the stick on labels are great for camp stuff, but do not always stay on clothing in the camp laundry. We recommend using either the iron on labels for clothing or permanent marker, all or which are available at The Canteen.

Our camp room is stocked with all the necessities, from bedding to flashlights, soft trunks and shower caddies. The Canteen specializes in custom camp name merchandise too. We work with local and national vendors for those extra special custom items. These take a few weeks to arrive, so it’s best to order early. Getting ready for camp is a process which is very manageable, if you start sooner rather than later. So call The Canteen to schedule your camp appointment now 201-383-0144.

Afterward, when you have your sleepaway camp supplies, see our “Sun’s Out, Trunks Out” blog entry for tips on how best to pack those trunks. If you have any questions, please call us, or your camp. You will find that everyone will be available and eager to help your camper have the “best summer ever!”

If you do not have your trunks yet, be sure to take advantage of The Canteen’s BOGO trunk event. Make your camp appointment before February 9, 2019, purchase one soft trunk and get the second trunk FREE (with a $300 or more purchase at your camp appointment). It is the best deal you will find.
